Yes, well it's getting a bit boring but I'm still working on my boxes. Although now they're more like little paintings. I've put the canvas that I made this week on top of the box, and gave the box a colour wash. Now, that was fun! I was wondering how to put some colour on there while still leaving the wood grain shine through. And then I had a light-bulb moment: I took a small sponge, dipped it in some water, dipped it in some paint, and wiped the whole box with it. It was done in like ... 1 minute! Whoooosshh! Why didn't I think of this sooner? I'm always painstakingly working with a paintbrush to cover my boxes with paint, while this is so much easier, quicker and nicer. It's a perfect technique for bare wood boxes.
This is what I have so far:
I still need to varnish it and put the lock back on. But I'm wondering whether to leave it like this or write a quote on there (or maybe inside the box). What do you think?
This is what the canvas of the smallest box started out as (it's 3 boxes that came together and fit inside eachother) (should've bought way more of these now that I've discovered how much fun this is....)
I finally saw something in there (after layers and layers of ink and paint....)
This is what I made of it. I'm seeing birds everywhere again :-) This is the box:
And this is the middle canvas:
I didn't make anything of this yet. I see 2 things: either a smiling face, or a long-necked lady looking sideways. Do you see it? But both have a guy wrapped around their neck. Not sure what I'll do with that one ☺ The image is so strong that I have trouble ignoring it, but on the other hand it may look really weird. Have to think about this one ....
And the boxes that I finished the lids of last week are also done now:
Made 2 more Christmascards (it's addictive):
Well, that's it for this week. I'm having some more things in progress that I'm not very happy with at the moment. Not sure what I'll do with them ....
I'm sharing this with all the wonderful artists of Paint Party Friday. Go have a look at the other participants, it's well worth it!
Thank you so much for visiting! Have a great Friday, and I hope your weekend will be filled with warmth, relaxation and happiness. ♥ ♥ ♥
I love the boxes. Really great work on them. I keep saying I'm going to go to the studio and get the cigar boxes I have but I don't. Laziness has hit. Excellent work your boxes, love them.
ReplyDeleteYour boxes are beautiful. I love the color combinations. What a great idea to stain with a sponge. I've tried painting on wood before and I hated it. Sponging seems like the way to go. Anyway, I think all of your boxes look great. You could even leave some as abstract compositions as they're so beautiful in that stage, too. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteDenthe,
ReplyDeleteOnce again, you've done a stunning job of everything. I especially love the boxes with the quotes around the perimeter of the paintings on the blue surfaces. It really accentuates the paintings, but also gives our eyes breathing space and time to enjoy the quote. Then the dots/ patterns on the side also lead our eyes to the quotes and paintings on the top! Great idea! Thanks for brightening our days with your beautiful colours and style. I really get inspired by you! Warn wishes to you, too!
I do love your boxex so much and your fantastic paintings Denthe.
ReplyDeleteZo mooi om te kwijlen.
lieve groetjes Marja
Your boxes are beautiful, as you say they are paintings in themselves. I see a long neck lady and one man wrapped around in your middle canvas. Love the cards.
ReplyDeleteOh Denthe.... they are stunning.... beautiful beautiful boxes... I love the quotes on them... I can see a long necked lady with a bird sitting in her hand in the middle canvas... and fabulous Christmas Cards... creative and gorgeous...
ReplyDeleteJenny ♥
You do!?? I can't! I can see a bird in the corner, but no hand. I would love to get rid of that guy though .... Maybe tomorrow I'll see with different eyes ... ☺
Heel fijn en creatief weekend!
Lieve groetjes,
Marianne
Denthe, your work is beautiful. The boxes alone are beautiful but I always love the quotes that you use.
ReplyDeleteYour boxes look amazing, you are so creative :) I love the birds face on the first box, he is so sweet. I think it would be nice to have a quote somewhere, either around the sides or on the inside of the lid.
ReplyDeleteI love seeing you boxes! They are so vibrant so unique! Happy PPF!
ReplyDeleteStunning boxes! thank you for sharing the creative flow of your work with us! The boxes and cards are just gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteLove what you are dooing, such a nice artwork on your boxes.
ReplyDeleteThese are so beautiful and what a great idea to let the grain of the wood shine through the colour of the paint wash!! I like it as it is without the quote - the painting speaks to everyone whereas the quote may only speak to certain folk depending on what it is, if you know what I mean?
ReplyDeleteAs for the third one - I see a rabbit with green ears sitting in the branches of a tree on top of a hill (did someone say space cakes?!)
Haha! I LOVE what people see in this! I've been looking at it and can't find any rabbit and certainly not a tree ☺ Wish I could though, I can't get rid of that long necked lady with the guy around her neck ...
Deletethese boxes are awesome! the middle canvas...i see a woman with her hair blowing in the wind...her face to the sun. it's going to be amazing, i'm sure of that!
