Day 6: drippy girl

Had fun with watercolors today. Drew the girl in graphite, painted some details in watercolor and then just dripped some watercolor paint over the whole page. Which is not so easy I discovered. I always wonder how  artists manage to get these wonderful drips on their paintings. My paint won't drip, or only in big fat lumps. Which is not what I'm after. So then I start spraying the page with water, but then everything mixes and gets all blurry, which is not what I want either.

Anyway, on this girl I kinda liked the blurry effect. It makes it soft and dreamy looking, which is okay for me I guess.

Day 5: mini-painting

Made a small painting on a mini-canvas again. Time sure is catching up on me. I have a few "works in progress" laying around, which I'll hopefully finish in the next couple of days. But I'll have to throw in some pencil sketches as well I guess, if I want to keep up with this challenge. Painting is sometimes just too much work. When I'm stuck with painting, I find the best thing is often to leave it alone and in the morning look at it again with fresh eyes.

Not to worry. As long as I'm doing something creative every day, I'm happy. And I've already learned a lot these past few days, forcing myself to finish things and not think too much.

Day 4: Lyrics girl

I decided to make a lyrics-girl again. When I first started this blog (only 4 months ago, I can't believe it!), I was kinda addicated to making lyrics-girls. Didn't make one in a long time, but now I felt like it. The lyrics are from James Blunt.

Day 3: experiment

I was experimenting with a prismacolor technique from Adriana Almanza, but I didn't like the result. Way too grainy, too dark too, and I couldn't get it smoothed out. In other words: I hated it.

And when I hate something that I made, I start experimenting. Because it doesn't matter if I ruin it, since I already hate it anyway. Perfect time to try things out. So I started adding color all around her and where her hair should be, with a pallet knife, and I kinda liked the result. She looks a bit pained though. Guess she didn't like what I was doing to her ;-)

I'll post her anyway. After the redhead from yesterday, here's the bluehead!

Day 2: since you are gone

Wow, the days sure fly by lately! I can't believe how many people signed up for the challenge! 83 up till now!! It's gonna be a daytime job (or in my case rather a night-time job) to keep up with all the new entries. I will have to restrict it to 2 times a week or so, otherwise I'll never be able to get my faces done ;-)

Today's face is graphite, coloured pencil en acrylics. I made it in my journal, scanned it, and then I used Photoshop to paste it on a background of one of the paintings that I'm currently working on, and to add text to it. Lately I'm into a phase that I want to add text or poetry to everything. The poem (well, it's only part of it) is from Isabelle Cooper.

Day 1: face 1!

I had a surge of creativity today. Started a few backgrounds, made some sketches, ... I think this challenge is exactly what I needed. Thank you Ayala Art!

Let's go for it!

Okay, this might not be the wisest thing to do, but I'm gonna do it anyway. I'm signing up again for the second 29 faces challenge. I have been looking at the faces I created the first time around, and I must admit that I've done more in that month than I've done in the 2 months after that. I need to push myself a bit, and participating in a challenge is the best way for me, because once I sign up, I feel obliged to finish it. That's just me ;-)

I will try to work a bit more on canvas, so that I can use these faces to sell on markets. I do feel that practice makes all the difference. When I tried to paint a face last week I was really struggling and I honestly didn't remember how to go about it. Very frustrating. It took me ages to finish it.

If you're interested in this challenge: you can still sign up! You will have to create a face every day (well, there are 2 extra days in May, so that gives you some space) for the month of May. Yes, it starts today, so hurry or you'll be behind from the start ;-) It can be any face, any size, any medium, any technique. It doesn't even have to be human. How can you say no to that!?

I will have to hurry now, so that I can post my first face tonight... (is the stress beginning already !?)
