Summer of Color week 3

Every year for the Summer of Color challenge I choose a theme in which I want to do all my paintings. The first year I chose intuitive paintings, the second year I chose coloured doodles, and last year I chose negative space painting. This year I wanted to do intuitive painting again, but alas, for this week I couldn't.... Why not?

Well, you see, the colors this week are: two shades of purple and one shade of yellow. Purple and yellow are complementary colours, meaning they're opposite eachother on the color wheel. And complementary colors, when mixed together, create mud. Hmmm, not a "colour" that makes me happy...

Since the backgrounds for my intuitive paintings are the three shades mixed and mingled and dripped together, I couldn't do that for these colours. So I decided to do a coloured doodle. Here it is:

I had an old wooden painting with a kids' scene on there, that was in my children's bedroom when they were little. Since they are teenagers now, they don't want that kids' stuff anymore, so I sanded it, put some gesso on there and then painted my doodle in two shades of purple and one shade of yellow.

I must admit I find it a bit hard this year to work with only three shades. Before I usually used more shades of the colour prescribed, and I like that more. I am getting curious about the colours next week though. Hope they're not complementary colours again ... (hint!)

I also worked at my sidetables, and they are almost finished. Still some more work to do on the sides, and then they need to get some layers of varnish. But most of the work is done!

Here they are all three together:

This is the smallest one:

The middle one:

And the largest:

I love running my fingers over them, the texture feels so lovely. Here you can see a bit how the dots are raised:

LOVE doing this. I already sanded the new ones, tomorrow hopefully when I find the time I will do the base colour, and then it's playtime again :-)

I'm linking this to Paint Party Friday, to Summer of Color and to Show you Face. Lovely work to see over at those sites, have a look!

Here's my funny for this week:

hahaha! Sorry if I offend anyone with this, but jeesh, aren't these hairless cats ugly? Who ever got the crazy idea that a cat without hair would look nice? It would scare the hell out of me if it crossed my way in the hallway at night ....

Anyway, that's it for this week! Thanks for visiting! Hope your next days will be wonderful and full of everything that you need :-) See you next week ♥ ♥ ♥

  8. Your SOC piece is wonderful. I too struggle to use only 3 colours, but as I mix my own shades each week (ie, for a darker purple I used ultramarine and magenta), I feel OK using the base colours in areas of the painting (ie, there are bits of magenta showing through). If it is cheating - I don't care, LOL!

    Love your furniture pieces too!

  23. Love your summer of color entry. Sadly - I was not able to contribute this year. Sometimes life gets in the way. Your furniture is gorgeous - I have a couple of furniture projects but it's been so darn hot here. I know I live in the south but 99 F is hot even for here!

  34. Fun doodle but those tables, wow! Big projects can be so satisfying and these look fantastic. As for the poor hairless cat, it's not his fault! I think they are ugly, but cute. As long as they don't scratch me in the face. :D

  35. omg, that cat is HILARIOUS! Poor guy... hehehhee. ok, your doodles are out of this world. And those tables! What a fantastic job you did on those. A few years ago, i had participated in a charity event where all participants (artists) had been asked to paint chairs. All money was going towards NB Child Adoption so there were tons of little children's chairs painted in funky colours. Your beautiful tables reminded me of that evening and of how much fun I had painting those little chairs. Those dots on your table just make me REEEEEEALLY happy. :) xx

  36. It doesn't look like it was hard for youto stick to just three colors, as it turned out great!

  37. It's a wonderful creation. You brought those colors together so well.

  38. Denise I'm struggling with the colour selection this year too but possibly because I'd already decided I wanted to be able to use my chakra paintings and as they're mostly made up of several tones of the same colour, that plan has fallen through. I know what you mean about the limited palette though, it's a hard one but you've managed to create another beautiful doodle all the same. As for those tables - wow!! Thank you so much for all the information you gave me on how you create those amazing dots - I have been a bit tardy in replying to my emails but I really appreciate it. I'm not sure I could ever create something as perfect as these but I absolutely love them! they will sell in a heartbeat (if you can bear to part with them!)

  42. What a fabulous coloured doodle. I love it! Your tables look so good too! Beautiful designs. Bald cats like that always make me feel sad. It seems really cruel to me to breed something that ought to have fur without. Strange. xxx
