This week's colors are pink-pink-orange, which means 2 shades of pink and one shade of orange. And although these are some of my favorite colours, especially the orange, I didn't really enjoy using them in this piece. Mostly because they are too much alike, and I always love the contrast of these bright colors with blues and greens. And I couldn't use those .... That's the challenge of course, but still... Not so happy with this week's piece as a result. This is the background I started from:
It was the result of putting some layers of 2 pinks and one orange (sorry, no idea which colours I used ☺) on a canvas, and then putting plastic wrap on top. After it dried I took it back off and it left these lines in there, which I really like. Such an easy way to mix some colours :-)
I saw two birds and that was it. And then I saw an eye. And the painting was born ...
In the end I had to use more shades of pink to get some contrast and make some shadows, but I think it's still okay for the challenge. Seems like I got a bird theme going again this year ;-)
The rest of the week I have mostly been working on my side-tables. Oh, it's addicting, it really is. I had forgotten how much fun it is to make dots, how a piece can transform before your eyes with each new line of dots. They are nearing completion, but I'll show them completely when they're all finished. Here's the biggest one :-)
I already went back to the recycling-store and bought three more tables. It's just so much fun to do in between other things.

ReplyDeleteI agree with you so much - that's why I find it hard to limit the palette - I like to use all the colours together!! That said, this piece is beautiful with just the pink and orange.
ReplyDeleteYour table is amazing!! How do you get the dots to be so perfectly round and similar in size for each section? I follow an artist on Instagram (whose name eludes me now) who refers to this as dotillism rather than pointillism - she's also from Australia and I wondered if it was a type of aboriginal art? I also wondered if she has a special implement to ensure she gets perfectly round dots - perhaps you can shed some light on it as it fascinates me!! I want this table so much - wish I could afford to buy and ship it to Scotland!!
thanks Nic! It is indeed based on Aboriginal Art. I love the technique, although I don't use the symbols that are used in aboriginal art. When I first started making dotpaintings I did it the way it's done in Aboriginal art, with wooden sticks (f.i. chopsticks) that you dip into the paint, put 2 or 3 dots and then take paint again. But I'm a fairly impatient person, so I started experimenting with easier and faster methods. I now use little squeeze bottles that I fill with paint. I love doing it this way, still very meditative but it's much faster, and I love to run my fingers over the dots and feel the texture. I have a friend who started dotpainting at the same time I did (a few years ago) and she still prefers to use the wooden sticks. I find it's harder to get the perfect round circles that way, because you need to keep taking paint, and the dots differ in size depending on how much paint you have on your stick. It's a fascinating way of making art. Have a go at it, I'm sure you'll love it!

I need that here at school because there are many kids who think they can wear the skimpy clothes but they just shouldn't. What a society we live in that makes us believe we all have to dress in one way to be beautiful instead of dressing to really look beautiful.

I love your tables , you have enlightened me as I'm from Australia, I was recently in a cafe and they had some amazing canvases on the wall, it was done all in dots with same raised dots and uniform shape like yours, the artist had done a whole scene with trees and a house , and the dots covered every space, it was amazing, I am familiar with aboriginal art, and yet this piece seemed different, now I know how it's done. Gorgeous Pink, Pink, and Orange piece. Also the table is wonderful. And looks like so much fun. As for your sign, the only time I was in Cornwall (1972) was the only time I have ever seen nude bathers and other people changing into bathing suits right there on the beach.
